"An Adjustment for the Ears"

With its soulful sound, Timberlake has revived the use of instruments when discussing love. In his new song, Suit and Tie from his latest album, The 20/ 20 Experience, Timberlake uses a combination of jazz and hip hop to express his love for his woman and this is easily expressed in his hook which says:

"And as long as I got my suit and tie
I’m a leave it all on the floor tonight
And you got fixed up to the nines
Let me show you a few things
All pressed up in black and white
And you’re dressed in that dress I like
Love is swinging in the air tonight
Let me show you a few things
Let me show you a few things
Show you a few things about love
While we’re in the swing of love
Let me show you a few things
Show you a few things about love”

  • His words are short and simple but they express his love not only for his woman but for material possession. He mentions her wearing a particular dress which elevates her beauty and his own attire in simple black and white which has been noted as being very elegant. With his smooth words and suave attitude about their attire it makes their relationship remarkably better than it was before because from the outside view the couple are exceeding normal standards. Not only are they good looking but they are happy.
  • These lyrics are extremely versatile considering the song can be used to go to a club or simply a fashion show. The lyrics are explicit and that is what an audience in this generation craves. We love using curses or as sponge bob would refer to them as sentence enhancers.
  • Although the song is clearly about love one most explore its other components. There are sexual overtones when Timberlake starts to sing “let me show you a few things” but he also finds a way to make the song playful by adding lyrics to it like in his second verse when he states:

"Stop, let me get a good look at it
Oh, so thick, now I know why they call it a fatty
And aww, shit so sick, got a hit and picked up a habit
But that’s alright, cause you’re all mine
Awww, go on and show ‘em who you call daddy
I guess they’re just mad cause girl, they wish they had it
Oh, my killer, my thriller, yeah you’re a classic
And you’re all mine tonight”

  • his comments on the woman’s figure, his possession of her, and her possession of him are all sensual and alluring. Through his lyrics he shows that he wants everyone to envy the relationship, their clothes are just an added bonus.
  • The best part of the song is that it shows Timberlake’s growth as an artist. He began his career in an all boys group singing pop hits but now his new transformation to more soulful music will bring him new fans and a wider audience. I hope he keeps up with the good music especially with songs like this. This song is an adjustment for the ears considering that every other song on the radio right now promotes pain and sorrow about relationships, this particular song is uplifting.

Graded: 5 Stars for Timberlake!
